I was sitting on a bank of one of the wetland ponds when this otter came from behind, dove into the pond and came out with a three and a half foot long giant salamander known as a "siren". He then dragged the siren up the bank and sat facing me from about 30 yards and began chowing down on his lunch! I have several serial photos showing different views of this otter dragging the siren out of the pond and eating it.
Yeah, he surpised me from behind as I was taking shots of a Great Blue Heron wading near the bank.
I guess because I was sitting low to the ground, I did not present too much of a threat to him.
His decision to eat his kill right there was a bonus event. Even still, I thought it wise of him to eat facing me so that he would know if I made a move to steal his catch like most other residents of the Wetlands would likely try to do.
